The coffee triangle consists of a trio of departments – Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío – sandwiched between Bogota, Medellin and Cali in the central Andes. The consistently warm temperatures, altitude and rich volcanic soil make for ideal coffee growing conditions and as such, this region is responsible for producing the majority of Colombia‘s coffee.

The landscape is one of vibrant rolling hills from which enormous wax palm trees soar towards the sky. Scattered across this blanket of green are charming towns such as Salento whose streets are lined with colourful houses.

Hike, cycle or horse ride through the beautiful Cocora Valley, drift across this beautiful landscape in a hot air balloon or kayak along the Rio Barragan. Many working fincas have been turned into boutique accommodation making this a wonderful place to relax, learn about the coffee industry while, of course, enjoying endless cups of Colombia‘s most famous export.

When to visit

Colombia’s coffee triangle experiences a dry season from December to March, which is also when the main coffee harvest takes place. Visit during these months to explore the undulating green hills and endless plantations under sunny skies, or hop into a hot air balloon to admire the lush landscapes from above.

Note that there’s another coffee harvest from April to June, called mitaca, but these months tend to be rainier. The region also has a second, shorter dry season in July and August.
